How to Design a Bedroom

Looking for tips on how to design a bedroom? Well, you’ve come to the right place.

One of the last places people tend to spend time and money on updating their homes are the bedrooms. But that shouldn’t be the case. Just because it isn’t the focal point of the home or the space where people gather when they come to visit, doesn’t mean you should ignore it.

Bedroom’s are meant to be your own personal sanctuary. A place where you can get away, relax and restore yourself. That’s why it’s so important to create that perfect balance between style and function. So here are our 5 tips on how to design a bedroom that fits you and your style.

#1. The Bedroom Layout

First things first, you must start with a bedroom floor-plan. The layout is critical when considering how to design a bedroom. Be sure to take several measurements of the room to give yourself an idea of what can and cannot fit the space. This is especially important if the room itself is small to begin with as you’ll want to ensure your furniture fits the space as well as your proposed layout. Don’t plan to purchase large, bulky furniture for a small bedroom with low ceilings. The same goes for the opposite as smaller pieces of furniture will look lost or incomplete in a bigger bedroom with higher ceilings. You want the perfect balance between the size of your bedroom and the furniture you choose to fill it with.

#2. Bedroom Furniture

One of the most common reasons for a bedroom redesign is due to the need of a new bed. After-all, it is the focal point of the room. But just because you may need a new bed, doesn’t mean you should go ahead and choose the very first one you lay eyes on. Think about the size of the bed. Do you have space for a larger bed, or would a smaller bed provide more space for other bedroom furniture? What about the style of bed? Do you require a storage bed with drawers underneath it, or would you rather have a bed that’s lower to the ground that’s easier to hop onto? Do you want it more traditional looking, or more of a modern look? No matter what your choice is, there are many different options out there for everyone. Keep in mind, the style of bed in which you choose will determine the style for the rest of the furniture you fill your bedroom with.

#3. Colours

As we mentioned earlier, your bedroom is meant to be your sanctuary. A peaceful, calm space to retreat and relax. So instead of choosing bold, electric colours for your walls, go for something a little more soothing. Choose a gentle or neutral colour like ivory, white, taupe or grey as they are always a safe choice. Neutral colours always make a great backdrop for your bedroom walls as they work well with most other colours. By doing so, this allows you to have fun with bright accents and patterns in your decor. Keep in mind, even the most neutral colours all have a subtle undertone to them. Try matching the undertones to your furniture. If you’re looking for a little extra help making your colour choices, the paint experts at your local paint store can help you choose the best option for your space.

#4. Storage

In order to achieve the serene feeling you’re looking for when you walk into your bedroom, you’re going to need to store things away. Keeping clothing, shoes and other small items out of sight is not only going to make your bedroom look clean and calm, but it’ll appear roomier as well. Look into purchasing a dresser or chest to store your personal items, or perhaps a closet system to maximize your closet space for all your clothing and shoes. Storing things underneath your bed is also a great option as it is usually dead space anyway. Look to purchase at least one dresser and one nightstand for each side of the bed. Storage is your best friend when it comes to organization, so be sure to invest in it.

#5. Lighting and Decor

There’s nothing that says cozy and comfortable more than a beautiful set of linens. Investing in a good set of quality linens can make all the difference in the world. High quality linens don’t only feel better on your skin, but they look better and last longer as well. When it comes to decor, adding an area rug or candles can really make your bedroom feel cozy. You may want to hang some art to add a splash of colour to the space or even a mirror to make the space feel larger. Have some fun with the decor and allow your bedroom to showcase your personal style.
